Join John French on His Council Candidacy Journey
Life-long Squamish citizen, John French, has announced he will run for council in the upcoming municipal elections on October 20.
French said in him voters will have a chance to elect a candidate who grew up in the community, has been following local politics since the 1980s, and is committed to see Squamish reach its full potential.
“Squamish is on the verge of an exciting transformation,” French said.
“The top three issues in this election are economic development, housing affordability and regional transportation. These are the issues I will focus most of my energy on through the next four years.”
French was born at Squamish General Hospital in 1969 and graduated from Howe Sound Secondary School in 1987.
He attended broadcast school and worked at various radio stations around B.C. between 1989 and 1990. Later, he started reporting on Squamish issues for Mountain FM and The Squamish Chief through to late 2005, and then again between 2011 and 2015.
As a journalist, he attended and reported on council and committee meetings regularly.
“It’s time for me to serve and give back to the community I have lived in almost all my life. After years of encouragement from friends and acquaintances I look forward to giving back to the community that raised me by serving as a member of council,” he said.
“My leadership with the Test of Metal and the Squamish Triathlon along with my election to the Squamish Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and all my other volunteer efforts is the foundation from which I launch this campaign.”
A campaign website is currently under development. Campaign insights will be posted via Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and Instagram.

And , of course, he might add to this resume that he is a major supporter, and has been an employee, of ‘Woodfibre Liquid Natural Gas’ (WLNG)

What all around great guy and excellent candidate. I haven’t always agreed with every position that John has had, but I can say from years of knowing him he is man of great integrity, and his passion for the well being of this community is incredible. Bonne Chance John !

Pity that Neither the Squamish Reporter nor John French himself mentions his employment with and major supporter of the Wood Fibre LNG (fracked gas) facility that now will be run by an American and still is owned by a “revolving door” Indonesian/Malaysian/Singaporean businessman without the cleanest of reputations. Not one word about protecting, preserving, enhancing Squamish’s amazing environment and biodiversity, and thereby contributing to the health of its human inhabitants – incredible that is ignored (deliberately?) given he has grown up in this uniquely beautiful area.

A lot of shrewd local politicians used the anti-LNG catchphrases to get into council and then didn’t utter a word in these 4 years about it…Kent, Eliott, and of course, patty. If anything, this so-called environmental friendly council had wrecked havoc in town, giving away green land for development left, right and centre. Way to fool the public….

Too true.! And meanwhile this environmentally backward Council upped our taxes by over 6%, though cost of living had increased by only about 2% and also upped their salaries by 9%, while pensioners were lucky if their increases were 1.6%! But beware of the next Council, judging from the preliminary roster of candidates, our costs and thus taxes will bounce up even higher while our environmental protections will decline even more. Question, question, question each and every one.

John French is Squamish. No one else can dispute such a claim. Good luck, John, and it is about damned time!
Eddie Carter says
John is a great community member – best of luck!
