Squamish’s much-loved adult choir is hoping to tickle your funny bone — perhaps several times — later this month.
Sea to Sky Singers, who have been raising spirits along with their voices for many years, have chosen comedy as the theme for their annual spring concerts.
The group of approximately 30 singers, directed by Veronica McPhee and featuring piano accompaniment by Shira Weidenbaum, will organise concerts titled Comedy Tonight on Saturday, April 27 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 28 at 2 p.m. at Centrepoint, 38014 Fourth Ave.
“The theme was chosen to showcase the lighter side of choral music,” McPhee said. “We hope to engage a new audience while still appealing to our devoted crowd.
“There will be some interactive surprises to the event to engage the audience.”
The concerts will feature funny songs from a variety of musical genres, as well as a special treat — a stand-up performance by award-winning comedian Ross Dauk, named “Best Comedian in Vancouver” by the Georgia Straight (www.rossdauk.com/). Dauk will also serve as Master of Ceremonies, tailoring his commentary to the music.
“While some may think these two performance styles don’t mix, both can fit together seamlessly,” McPhee said. “Music relies on strong emotions; joy and laughter are some of the strongest. Music tells stories and some of the best storytellers are comedians. We’ve probably all connected with the adage, ‘It’s funny because it’s true.’”
The musical lineup includes arrangements of Stephen Sondheim classics including Comedy Tonight and Send in the Clowns — the latter offering the one moment of pathos amid the hilarity.
There will be a cash bar at the Saturday evening performance. Tickets are $20 at Anna’s Interiors, Concrete Blonde or at the door. Children 12 and under are free.
