The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) is currently working on short-term improvements to one of the most dangerous intersections in town.
Safety improvements are being planned at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Highway 99.
Mayor Karen Elliott raised the issue with Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Claire Trevena at the UBCM conference last year.
The Highway 99 intersection remains one of the most dangerous intersections in Squamish.
According to ICBC statistics of the last five years, 265 collisions were reported at the intersection, including the ones at the turning lane.
Of the 265 collisions, as many as 100 caused injury or proved fatal.
In fact, the five most dangerous intersections in town are at Highway 99.
As many as 99 collisions happened at Highway 99 and Mamquam Road, followed by 81 collisions at Garibaldi Way and Highway 99, 56 collisions at Finch Drive and Industrial Way and turning lane.
MOTI is presently working on design work that would enhance safety improvements at the intersection.
“As further details are developed, anticipated by spring, we will engage with our partners so they have an opportunity to review and offer input before plans are finalized,” MOTI said in a statement.
The design work for the safety improvements is expected to be over by the end of the year.
Trevena has also promised Mayor Elliott she would look at other concerns she raised with her at UBCM.
“I have asked staff to follow up with you to discuss in more detail your concerns about the safety of various locations along Highway 99, such as Alice Lake Road,” she told Mayor Elliott.
