BC RCMP says people in the province are being targeted by fraudsters who want to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) is reporting that scammers are setting up websites to sell bogus products, and using fake emails, texts, and social media posts as a ruse to take your money and get your personal information.
The emails and posts may be promoting awareness and prevention tips, and fake information about cases in the neighborhood.
They also may be asking people to donate to victims, offering advice about unproven treatments, offering protective gear or detection kits, or fake sanitizers.
The Federal Trade Commission and Food and Drug Administration in the United States has warned of companies selling fraudulent products that claim to treat or prevent the disease.
The United States has not approved any such products.
The public is also being warned about phishing, spear phishing and other malicious email campaigns that capitalize on the public fears about COVID-19.
Police are also issuing caution to not feel pressurized to make a donation, and to first verify that a charity is registered. Be aware of people selling miracle remedies.
