As many as 26 mini-horses that were rescued by BC SPCA from the Interior BC in March have been adopted.
The mini-horses were among 53 animals that were rescued from the property. Six cattle, five llamas, four goats and two emus were also recovered from the home following complaints of animal neglect.
Twenty of the mini-horses taken into care were pregnant.
The horses were badly matted and caked in mud, and were suffering from malnourishment, limb and hoof issues, eye problems, dental issues and hair loss due to lice.
The horses have been dewormed, vaccinated, deloused, groomed, and had dental exams and farrier work done, said Leiki Salumets, manager of equine and farm animal care for the BC SPCA.
The mini-horses were among 300 animals— ranging from cats, kittens, dogs, puppies, birds, small animals and farm animals—who found a home as part of BC SPCA’s half-price adoption promotion.
“We had more than 100 applications for the mini-horses, and even had a hauler donate their services to transport them to their new homes in return for a donation to the SPCA,” Salumet said.
