The Squamish Public Library building may be closed, but there are still lots of ways to access its free digital resources from home.
The library staff misses seeing the community every day, but they are hard at work making sure you can find and access the digital materials you need to stay connected, inspired, and entertained while stuck at home.
Below are some new ways to engage with the library.
Library patrons who miss borrowing books can download ebooks and audiobooks through the Libby app, which is available from your device’s app store.
You can access hundreds of free magazines through RBDigital, or download ebooks to an ereader device through Library2Go.
If you need something new to watch, you can stream movies on IndieFlix, a database of over 7,000 high-quality shorts, features, documentaries, classic TV shows and Web series from 85 countries.
Your library card also gives you free access to Lynda.com, which offers thousands of online courses on topics such as web design, photography, playing a musical instrument, and much more.
Through the online platform Mango, you can learn a new language. Mango currently has over 60 language programs, including English as a second language.
If you are studying for the IELTS and looking for helpful resources, the library also has an online study tool called Road to IELTS.
The library has resources for kids and teens as well! TumbleBooks is a collection of animated, talking picture books with interactive puzzles and games. TeenBookCloud is an online collection of chapter books and graphic novels. There is no limit to the number of books you can read, and it is also available as an app, so you can use it on any device. The library also offers access to WorldBook, a comprehensive and kid-friendly online encyclopedia.
The Squamish Public Library Facebook page will now also share regular storytime videos with the Children’s Librarian, Kate. If you miss in-person storytimes, you will soon be able to watch virtually three times a week!
On Thursday, May 7, the library will host a live talk from Marie Palmer about DNA Testing and Genealogy on Zoom. You can find more information, including the link to the meeting, on the library’s Facebook page.
All of these digital resources are accessible through the library’s website: https://squamish.bc.libraries.coop/.
Be sure to follow the Squamish Public Library on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, and sign up for the library’s email newsletter to stay up-to-date on the library’s closure, programs, new resources, and more.
The library invites anyone in the community to sign up for a temporary library card, which will give access to all of these online services and more.
Email LibraryDirector@Squamish.ca with your full name, birth date, address, and phone number, and a library staff member will set up your new account. The library would love to hear from you. If you have any questions, you can send an email or message us on social media, and staff will get back to you as soon as possible.
Rachel Bergquist is the Public Services Librarian at the Squamish Public Library.
