District of Squamish Stage 1 water restrictions go into effect May 1.
During Stage 1, lawn watering with a sprinkler is allowed two days per week between 4 and 10 am, and 7 and 10 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday for even numbered addresses, and Thursday and Sunday for odd numbered addresses.
In the last five years, summer water consumption has increased by an average of 72% per cent in Squamish, mostly due to outdoor sprinkler use, district said.
“Squamish may see considerable amounts of rainfall. Despite that, it’s important to know that our fresh water is not an unlimited resource,” says Mayor Karen Elliott.
District says if used wisely, the local system has capacity to meet the town’s growing needs for the next 10 years.
The District’s Water Conservation Plan aims to reduce water consumption per capita by 15% by 2031.
