The District of Squamish is setting aside $750,000 for the intersection and transportation improvements around Garibaldi Way and Tantalus Road.
The district says this will help address traffic flow and safety of pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles in this busy area.
“The junction is a major connection to north Garibaldi Estates and its awkward alignment and multiple driveway accesses are creating challenges for all users as the community grows,” the district says.
The budget for the intersection improvement is among $43,477,930 in improvements district is planning in the community.
The funds will be spent on critical infrastructure replacement, active transportation, preventative maintenance, flood protection and capacity upgrades in 2021.
Taxpayers will fund $1.2 million of the total amount while the remainder will be obtained from grants, loans, reserves and development cost charges, district says.
As much as $1,835,000 will be spent to upgrade pedestrian and cycling infrastructure throughout Squamish with projects such as a separated bike lane along Pemberton Avenue and lighting of the Corridor Trail along Loggers Lane.
District will spend $3,877,000 on upgrading section of Mamquam Road between Government Road and Highway 99 which will include storm, curb, gutter, parking, sidewalk and protected bike lane, as well as sewer, water and paving work.
Dentville Community Park, Pioneer Way extension project, and flood protection upgrades to protect Downtown Squamish are other infrastructure projects district is working on.
