A climber stuck at the Stawamus Chief was rescued by the Squamish Search and Rescue members yesterday.
BJ Chute, the manager of Squamish SAR, said the call from RCMP came around 8 pm for a climber who had fallen down and had his leg stuck in a rock crack.
“We were able to deploy a team and long line to a ledge above him, and make a rope system that was lowered to him for rescue,” Chute said.
The rescue operation began around 8 pm and last until 2:30 am in the morning. As many as 20 SAR members took part in the exhausting rescue effort.
The SAR team had to drill in the rock and chip away part of the rock to free his leg.
After 5.5 hours, he was brought down to a waiting ambulance, from where he was taken to the hospital.
Chute said the climber did not sustain substantial injuries in this incident.
“We were there until 2:30 am, and are now cleaning up and readying to be prepared for any calls,” he said.
A climber was also rescued another climber around 5 pm at Murrin Park yesterday.
Although SAR was initially called to rescue, BC ambulance and fire rescue were able to extricate the person.
