District of Squamish council will soon be voting on a rezoning application for a new townhomes development on Raven Drive.

Empowered Development Ltd is proposing to rezone two lots, 1005 and 1009 Raven Drive, from rural residential to a multiple-unit residential zone.

The rezoning will allow the construction of 35 three-storey townhomes with a portion of the property dedicated for farming and public open space.

The development proposes two crop areas and a detention pond for agriculture purposes. The site is approximately 130 metre east of the intersection with Loggers Lane.

The developer is proposing 116 parking spaces, which is 46 more spaced than what the district bylaw requires.

The final date to request a public meeting for this proposal is October 1.

When will the District staff address the shortage of homes for seniors and those who are physically disabled? We need small lots with small homes and no stairs! As well we need another mobile home park. We all do not want to live in apartment buildings. Only Council can make developers build something besides 3 or more storey townhomes and apartments. Make them pay for infill and up zoning. Staff are not serving Council well or they would identify the need for alternate types of housing. There are some beautiful trailer parks in the province. I know Sabina Foofat thought we should go in that direction. Too bad she is no longer with the District.

    Hi there,
A small correction to the article, Empowered Development is a development consultant working on behalf of the owners, Rivertown Properties.
Further to this, the application is allocating, not “dedicating” land for farming and park space.

    Sincerely, Empowered Development.
