The Squamish star of the hit Netflix series Maid is inviting the community to watch and be a part of Every Brilliant Thing, the latest offering by the local theatre group, Between Shifts Theatre.
“We need to gather, we need to laugh and feel hopeful again and we also need to make sure we are checking in on our own mental health,” says Amy Reid.
Described by audience as ‘life-affirming, tear-jerking, and hilarious,” this immersive show is now playing at the Eagle Eye Theatre until March 26.
Written by Duncan Macmillian, Every Brilliant Thing is the story of a woman whose mother battles chronic depression so as a child she starts a list of all the brilliant things in life that make life worth living. The list grows with her into adulthood as her own mental health is put to the test and ultimately shapes the way she sees the world around her.
Reid says while the show does tackle the heavy themes of depression and suicide, it does so in a way that is funny and yet sensitive and charming. “Every Brilliant Thing is a one-woman show but the audience plays the other characters in the story which makes it something really unique and special,” Reid says. “Duncan wanted to make it an experience for audience so that they were actually part of the story rather than just observers,” Reid says.
Amy Reid, who is also the show’s narrator, started acting at a really young age, and was very active all the way to her 20s until ‘life took over’. She started acting again when she moved to Squamish 10 years ago and got involved with Between Shifts Theatre. As her interest in tv and films grew, her agent got her to audition for the role of a supervisor in the hit Netflix show Maid, the third most watched show in Canada last year.
Although Reid says she loves film and TV, her heart will always be in theatre. “As long as I am able, I will continue to work with community theatre.”
