Health Canada has issued a recall for a USB Charger Adapter sold by the online retailer Temu due to concerns about an electric shock hazard. The agency has advised consumers to cease using the product immediately and dispose of it according to municipal electronic waste guidelines.
According to Health Canada, the recalled USB Charger Adapter features 3 USB ports and was available for purchase in black, blue, and red colours on Temu.com, identified with the barcode 5600210341.
Following its sampling and evaluation program, Health Canada determined that the product poses an unreasonable risk of electric shock. Despite this assessment, as of February 5, 2024, no reported incidents or injuries were associated with the product in Canada, according to Health Canada.
Consumers who bought the affected USB Charger Adapter should seek a refund by contacting Temu through their Support Centre. Customers can also log in to their Temu accounts to access detailed information about the recall on the “Your Recalls and Product Safety Alerts” page.
Under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, recalled products are prohibited from being redistributed, sold, or given away within Canada. Health Canada encourages consumers to report any health or safety incidents related to using this product or any other consumer product or cosmetic by filling out the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.
According to Temu, 3,349 units of the China-manufactured product were sold in Canada between May 2023 and December 2023.
Temu has released the following statement:
Temu has issued a voluntary recall of a USB charger adapter to buyers and advised them to stop using the product. We are working closely with the seller of the product to facilitate full customer refunds.
Working together with Health Canada, Temu issued the voluntary recall because the product may pose an existing or potential electric shock hazard to consumers. There have been no reports of incidents or injuries related to this product to date.
