This week marks the debut set of shows from Squamish’s latest musical gem – Fresh Cut Grass, a rock/alt/emo cover band that promises to elevate the live music experience in the region with high-energy live shows. Fresh Cut Grass guides you on a musical journey that seamlessly blends the raw energy of rock, the intricate melodies of alt-rock, and the introspective depth of emo, the group said in a press release.
The name was carefully chosen to evoke a sense of familiarity coupled with invigorating freshness, the group says, but in reality it was a fun and quirky name suggested by Ian’s father, which better describes the band’s live performance. Led by a passion for re-igniting the golden music era of the 1990s-2000s, Fresh Cut Grass doesn’t just cover songs; they are played true to the original with all the fixins, shepherding listeners back to an era when music was fun, lively, raw, and angsty.
“We formed Fresh Cut Grass out of a shared love and yearning to play live music that we all identify with and spent our youth watching on MTV (back when it was still an outlet to discover great alternative music), burning CD mixes for our friends, or going to see a concert,” the group said. “We want to play music that evokes a fun energy, passion and provides an alternative outlet overlooked in today’s live music scene.”
The group is excited to bring songs from Pearl Jam, Jimmy Eat World, QOTSA, Blink-182 to a live setting with a strong belief that people will love the nostalgia it evokes. “We plan to incorporate the inspiration and style we got from these early influences to write original music around the same genre. This will allow us a creative outlet of new, modern music with a nod to the bands that brought us here. We’re excited to play our home ground in the coming weeks.”
Fresh Cut Grass invites music lovers in the Squamish community and beyond to attend their debut performance with a free show at The Backyard on March 8, followed by hosting a “Take Back night” at Tricksters Hideout on April 5, with guest DJ, reliving all the 2000’s nostalgia and promising a dynamic and unapologetic homage to our roots of big hit rock, alternative and emo music.
Their mission is to not only relive the golden age of music through carefully curated rock hits like “What’s my age again?” and “Alive,” but to rediscover them in an entirely new light.
