A new study has revealed the impressive economic impact of the Squamish Farmers’ Market.
Conducted by the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets and the University of Northern British Columbia, the 2023 BC Farmers’ Market Economic Impact Study found that the Squamish market generated a staggering $7.54 million in economic activity, reflecting the combined value of direct sales at local neighbour businesses and direct sales at the farmers’ market itself.
The market attracted 145,356 annual visitors, with each shopper spending an average of $46 per visit, further contributing to the region’s economic prosperity, said Megan Verge, the farmers market manager.
“As the manager of the Squamish Farmers’ Market, I am thrilled to see the positive impact our market has on the community and the broader region. These results underscore the vital role farmers’ markets play in local food stability as well as supporting local businesses, fostering community engagement, and driving economic growth,” she said.
The detailed breakdown of direct sales showed that local neighbor businesses saw a significant increase in revenue, with $123,313 recorded on each market day. The farmers’ market also saw a boost in sales, reaching $122,653 on average per market day.
With an annual visitor count of 145,356 and 16% identified as tourists, the Squamish Farmers’ Market is a major draw for both locals and visitors alike. The average shopper spent $46 per visit, further solidifying the market’s contribution to the local economy.
One key aspect highlighted in the study was shopper loyalty. It was found that 32% of shoppers have been regularly visiting the market for five or more years, showcasing its enduring appeal. Additionally, 55% reported visiting at least once a month, demonstrating its consistent draw and impact on the community, Verge added.
