Knowledge Network, British Columbia’s public broadcaster, has released the trailer for its hit docu-series Search and Rescue: North Shore Season 2. It will premiere on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at 8 p.m.
Directed and produced by Silvapark Films’ Grant Baldwin and Jenny Rustemeyer, the series gives viewers unprecedented access to the NSR team as they respond to distress calls they receive from Vancouverites and tourists alike.
The local Squamish Search and Rescue is also featured in episode 2. “Squamish SAR is featured in episode 2 and highlights the variety of tasks that our team is called out for, the dedication and diversity of the 100% volunteer team”, said Christy Allan, Squamish SAR Communications Director.
“We think the series will provide a glimpse into the complex terrain the team operates in around Squamish. Hiking, mountain biking and climbing are the top callouts that the team responds to, and the episode touches on examples of all three. The episode really highlights the personal impacts of being a member of this tight-knit team and the variety of specialized skills required to respond to tasks.”
Michelle van Beusekom, CEO of Knowledge Network, said the on-the-fly storytelling in life-and-death situations requires extraordinary skill and agility, and the access is based on a deep relationship of trust and respect for all involved.
“Grant and Jenny are two of BC’s most talented documentary storytellers and have done an exceptional job in crafting a series that brings viewers inside this unique and compelling world. As a newcomer to BC, I was surprised to learn that the members of these incredibly skilled teams are all volunteers!”
Returning to the screen is NSR Team Lead, Mike Danks, along with many other active team members. Season 2’s storyline expands further to Squamish and will showcase the courageous efforts of the search and rescue team there. No two rescue situations are alike for the highly trained volunteer search and rescue teams as they must swiftly jump into action when a call is received. Thinking on their feet, the teams works alongside other first responders to assess the situation and make an action plan to find those in trouble and return them to safety.
“The complicated retrievals the teams are performing are incredible to see, and we wanted to document more of the process for how these are done – ultimately giving the audience a real sense of what is involved with the rescues they see on the news,” said Grant Baldwin, Director of Search and Rescue: North Shore. “Modern day innovative technology, equipment and teamwork with other first responder organizations are helping both NSR and Squamish SAR save lives, and we’re proud to continue to highlight these inspiring stories for season 2.”
Airing on Knowledge Network on Tuesdays from May 28, 2024 to June 25, 2024, the season will be available to stream for free across Canada at www.knowledge.ca/searchandrescue and on the Knowledge Network app.
