A bear that attacked a man near Summerland has not been located and may still be wounded, according to the Conservation Officer Service (COS).
The incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Thursday when two men hunted in the McNulty Forest Service Road area near Agur Lake. One of the hunters shot and wounded a black bear, believing it was killed. As the man approached the bear, it suddenly got up, knocked him down, and attacked.
The hunter managed to fire another shot, but the bear escaped. The injured man was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The attack was reported to the COS around 3:30 p.m. Conservation Officers responded promptly and thoroughly searched the area but could not locate the bear. It remains unclear whether the bear is alive or dead.
The COS advises the public to avoid the area and take precautions in case of wildlife encounters. Recommended safety measures include travelling in groups and carrying bear spray. The search for the bear continues.
