A wildfire that broke out on Debecks Hill has been contained by Squamish Fire Rescue and the BC Wildfire Service. Crews are now focused on extinguishing remaining hotspots, according to an update by the District of Squamish on June 17, 2024.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by BC Wildfire Service and Natural Resources Officers. Squamish Fire Rescue emphasized the importance of campfire safety, reminding the public that campfires are only permitted on residential private property within the District of Squamish when conditions are safe.
Earlier in the day, at 5:31 p.m., Squamish Fire Rescue teams responded to a brush fire at Highway 99 N and E Depot Road, working alongside two crews from the BC Wildfire Service – Coastal Fire. Additional resources were mobilized to assist in the efforts.
There was no immediate risk to the public but locals were advised to avoid trails in the affected area. A campfire permit is required for campfires in the District of Squamish. Fires in any public space including forests, riverbanks, mountainsides, beaches and open-air burning are not allowed in the district.
