Tourism Squamish has unveiled its innovative Red Bag Program, aimed at encouraging campers and outdoor enthusiasts to embrace responsible tourism practices while enjoying the natural beauty of Squamish.
The program aims to foster environmental stewardship and rewards participants for their commitment to maintaining the pristine beauty of the outdoors.
Starting July 11, the Red Bag Program will equip visitors with specially designated red garbage bags distributed by Tourism Squamish’s destination stewards team at key outdoor sites. These bags will encourage individuals to responsibly collect and dispose of their waste throughout their outdoor adventures.
Once filled, participants can return the red bags to the Visitor Centre located in the Squamish Adventure Centre. In recognition of their environmental stewardship, participants will receive a locally-made token from the Visitor Services team, which can be redeemed for a complimentary beverage at participating venues.
The token can be exchanged for a lager or latte at A-Frame Brewing Co or Howe Sound Brewing, or a caffeinated treat at Caffe Garibaldi. This incentive not only rewards individuals for their dedication to preserving Squamish’s natural splendor but also showcases community involvement and pride.
Lesley Weeks, Executive Director of Tourism Squamish, expressed her delight in introducing the Red Bag Program as part of the organization’s commitment to responsible recreation practices in Squamish. “This initiative reflects our dedication to preserving the natural environment that attracts visitors to the area, while also providing a tangible incentive for responsible behavior,” said Weeks.
“By participating in the Red Bag Program, visitors help keep our outdoor spaces clean and receive a well-deserved treat as a token of our appreciation.”
The Red Bag Program also supports Tourism Squamish’s mission to promote responsible recreation that respects and enhances the local environment and community. By encouraging visitors to participate in waste management actively, the program aims to reduce the ecological footprint of outdoor recreation and camping activities in Squamish.

Interesting, you buy all your food in plastic packages, carry them on your adventures, and return them in the red plastic bag, but in a stores you have to use a paper bag only to pack your groceries?
Makes total sense…
