FortisBC has increased its funding for builders in British Columbia, offering up to $20,000 to support the construction of energy-efficient homes that meet the highest levels of the BC Energy Step Code. The revamped New Home Program now provides $15,000 or more for homes built to Step 4 standards and $20,000 or more for net-zero-ready homes at Step 5, marking a significant boost from previous funding levels.
The updated program aims to make it easier for builders to design and construct homes that use less energy for heating, cooling, and electricity while accommodating fully electric and gas-electric homes. FortisBC collaborated with builders across B.C.’s diverse climate zones to better understand the needs and challenges of constructing high-efficiency homes. Key insights led to more flexible funding options and support for projects incorporating an integrated design approach, where all stakeholders work together to ensure energy efficiency.
“Offering rebates on new construction projects gives builders flexibility on how to approach their projects, especially in different climates, while still building higher-efficiency homes,” said Danielle Wensink, FortisBC’s director of conservation and energy management.
The program’s focus on energy efficiency from the initial design phase has already succeeded in projects like the Wilden Living Lab in Kelowna, where industry stakeholders collaborated to build a practical, net-zero-ready home. FortisBC’s enhanced funding options are designed to encourage builders to achieve higher energy standards and support growing communities, particularly in cities like Vancouver and Kelowna, where demand for new, energy-efficient housing is high.
Builders can access rebates by working with a certified energy advisor and meeting the BC Energy Step Code requirements. The funding increase is part of FortisBC’s broader efforts to help builders meet provincial energy efficiency targets while offering homebuyers more choices in their energy use.
