The District of Squamish is preparing to regulate e-bikes and other electric mobility devices as they increase in popularity. In a memo to the council, the district staff say they plan to update local bylaws on where and how these devices can be used.
New definitions were introduced for e-bikes and personal mobility devices after BC amended the Motor Vehicle Act in May 2023.

These changes expand the province’s authority over e-bikes on roads and will be further enforced by an upcoming Motor Assisted Cycle (E-bike) Regulation. Squamish will update its local regulations to align with provincial developments to ensure that pathways, trails, and other non-road spaces are managed appropriately.
E-bikes: What is District planning
District staff are reviewing bylaws to ensure they are up-to-date and clear on e-bikes. This review will lead to decisions on where and how electric devices can be used and also guide where regulatory signage will be installed.
The district will also launch a safety campaign with Squamish RCMP in fall of 2024, focusing on safe e-bike practices, legal requirements, helmet use, speed limits, and riding etiquette in shared spaces.
The district has also requested a meeting with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure during the upcoming Union of British Columbia Municipalities conference. The District will seek advice on legislative changes and updates on e-mobility pilot projects, which will help Squamish refine its policies to align with provincial efforts.

Squamish plans to launch an e-bike safety education campaign in the spring 2025, focusing on community engagement through workshops and programs, and online resources to reduce conflicts between pedestrians, cyclists, and e-bike users. The initiative also seeks to promote e-bikes as a sustainable transportation option.
