Outbound Station, a popular rest stop and café along the Sea-to-Sky Highway, has applied to renew its Temporary Use Permit (TUP). The owners are planning a ‘light’ expansion, including more seating and food offerings.
The business, located south of Britannia Beach, has applied to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District (SLRD) to extend the permit first granted in September 2021 for three more years. “The applicant proposes to continue the operation of a temporary takeout restaurant and café business as an initiative to support the influx of residents, workers, and tourists in the region,” notes a staff report to the SLRD board.
According to the proponent Jeffrey Edwards, the business has become a vital stop for travellers on the Sea to Sky and provides amenities such as public washrooms, picnic areas and food served from an energy-efficient building designed with minimal environmental impact.
“Outbound Station provides year-round employment to an average of 35 part-time and full-time employees, including 12 team members from the Britannia Beach community and two from the Lions Bay community,” the proponent Jeffrey Edwards writes to the SLRD. “This employment helps provide residents financial and skill development opportunities, boosts local spending, generates tax revenue, and supports the community’s vitality.”
Located at 27400 Sea-to-Sky Highway, Outbound Station occupies 1,427 square feet of land owned by Tiger Bay Development. The SLRD will vote on granting the Temporary Use Permit to the cafe at a meeting of the board at 6 pm today.
