The Britannia Mine Museum is gearing up for two weekends of Halloween fun with its “Fang-tastic” event series, running on October 19–20 and October 26–27. The event promises a variety of bat-themed activities suitable for all ages, blending Halloween excitement with educational experiences about these misunderstood creatures.
One of the event’s highlights will be a spooky transformation of the Museum’s underground mine tunnel into a bat cave, where visitors can embark on a haunted train ride. Adventurers will delve deep into the mine to learn about the relationship between bats and abandoned mines. Other attractions include the “Castle of Myth” vampire chamber in the historic machine shop and the “Bat out of the Darkness” exhibit, which features interactive displays that explore the fascinating world of bats, their unique abilities, and the myths surrounding them.
“These little creatures often get a bad rap due to misconceptions,” said Derek Jang, Manager of Interpretive Delivery at the Britannia Mine Museum. “Halloween is a great opportunity to have fun while also educating people about the important role bats play in our ecosystems, especially in old mines, which serve as critical habitats.”
In addition to the spooky experiences, the museum will host Bat Ambassadors from the Community Bat Programs of BC on October 19 and 20. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., these experts will be on-site to discuss bat conservation efforts in British Columbia and how visitors can help protect these vulnerable species.
