The District of Squamish has issued caution after reports of bear activity in the Squamish Estuary. District said both incidents were surprise encounters. There is an increase in bear activity leading into winter hibernation, and the public is urged to be cautious and “bear smart” when using the trails.
“Make noise or clap your hands, especially when your line of sight is compromised. Remember to keep dogs on a leash and slow down when turning corners to avoid surprising a bear that may not be aware of your presence,” the District said.
This is the fourth time the district has issued such an advisory this year.
In May this year, caution tape and barricades were installed in the area, and trails closed after a bear attacked and injured one person. The warning was again issued in June when a black bear suddenly charged and swatted at two people walking their dogs. However, no physical contact occurred, and no injuries were reported.
The Conservation Officer Service encourages the public to report any bear conflicts or aggressive bear behaviour immediately via the 24-hour Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
