A small earthquake struck off the northern Vancouver Island coast early Monday morning.
According to Natural Resources Canada, a 4.1-magnitude quake struck at 6:24 a.m., located 228 km southwest of Bella Bella. The tremor was marked as “Not felt.”
On September 26, a 4.0-magnitude earthquake had hit near Victoria around 4:05 a.m., with its epicentre located about 18 km northeast of the city, near Saanichton, at a depth of 52 km. Light tremors were reported in parts of Greater Victoria and Vancouver, though no injuries or damage occurred, and none are expected.
While earthquakes are common in B.C., most are too minor to be felt. Significant quakes capable of causing structural damage occur roughly once per decade, primarily along the West Coast, where the risk of a tsunami also exists.
