Each October, Sea to Sky Community Services Community Living staff, families, caregivers, and participants look forward to celebrating Community Inclusion Month with the party of the year – the Community Living Potluck.
This year’s potluck did not disappoint. The event was hosted at the Squamish United Church’s Sanctuary. More than 40 people ate, laughed and danced the night away to the tunes of the local band, the Wells. “This is my favourite show of the year,” said Mike Heslop on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.
Each attendee came dressed enthusiastically in their favourite Halloween costume, brought a delicious dish for the potluck, and generously donated chocolate by Xoco Westcoast Chocolates and other items for the participants from Tim Hortons.
There were two standout moments in the evening: an uplifting opening ceremony hosted by Brandon Landry and a feature song he sang with the Wells providing the backup music.
Brandon is an active member of many Community Living celebrations and programs, even asking the Squamish City Council to declare October Community Inclusion Month in 2022. As we gathered to celebrate inclusion, it was heartwarming to see Brandon’s confidence as he serenaded the crowd.
Adults with developmental disabilities can face challenges in preparing to attend and perform at large social gatherings, and our Community Living staff help clients prepare for the evening by assisting them in getting ready to dress up (with a Halloween theme this year, everyone dressed up in amazingly creative costumes), greet friends, share food around a table, and pose for photos. Creating multi-sensory events with careful input from staff and participants creates moments for connection and empowerment for those who attend.
“The potluck is a highlight of my year,” shares Chelsie Brubacher, Director of Service Delivery for Sea to Sky Community Services. “I’m so proud of our Community Living team for all their hard work in preparing the event and keeping the energy flowing.”
Please DONATE to ensure all people in Sea to Sky have opportunities for inclusion, connection to others, and a sense of belonging.
