A BC man, Matthew Darlington, 49, was sentenced on November 5, 2024, to six years in prison following a guilty plea for operating a vehicle with methamphetamine in his system and causing death.
Alongside the prison term, Darlington faces a 35-year driving ban and must submit a DNA sample.
The case dates back to September 7, 2021, when emergency responders, including the Sooke RCMP, Sooke Fire Department, and BC Ambulance, arrived at a crash on the 5800 block of Sooke Road around 2:00 a.m. They found severe injuries among the occupants of a black Chevrolet Cavalier that had struck a curb and collided with a tree.
The accident claimed the life of a 7-year-old child and hospitalized four others. The Vancouver Island RCMP General Investigation Section assisted with the inquiry, culminating in Darlington’s conviction and sentencing.
