Multiple collisions in both directions on Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge are causing significant traffic delays, prompting BC Highway Patrol to urge commuters to reconsider travel until conditions improve.
“If you’re a confident driver prepared for winter conditions, you still need to slow down significantly,” said Corporal Michael McLaughlin of BC Highway Patrol. “Stay off the roads entirely if you’re not confident driving in the snow or your vehicle isn’t winter-ready. This isn’t your day.”
BC Highway Patrol is working alongside the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to clear the highway and restore safe driving conditions as quickly as possible.
In the meantime, officials are urging all drivers to take the following precautions:
- Avoid driving unless absolutely necessary.
- Ensure your vehicle is equipped with proper snow tires and completely cleared of snow, including windows, roof, hood, and trunk.
- Allow extra travel time and exercise additional patience.
- Even if you’re an experienced driver, reduce speed significantly.
Motorists are advised to plan ahead and check DriveBC, as well as local radio and TV stations, for real-time updates on road conditions.
