The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has cleared police of wrongdoing following an investigation into a dog bite injury sustained during an arrest near Squamish.
The incident occurred on June 21, 2024, when RCMP officers searched for a stolen vehicle along Highway 99 near Porteau Cove. After locating a grey Nissan Frontier believed to be connected to the theft, officers deployed a police service dog to search a nearby wooded area. The dog located a person who was then arrested, sustaining a dog bite injury in the process.
The IIO, which investigates incidents of serious harm involving police, launched a review shortly after the arrest. Evidence considered included medical records, police statements, and the account of the person injured.
The agency’s Chief Civilian Director has now concluded that there are no reasonable grounds to believe any officer committed an offence. Although the investigation has concluded, the IIO’s public report will not be released until related court proceedings are complete.
